The Rudgwick Steam Show

On Bank Holiday Monday, I went to the Rudgwick Steam and Country Show with my parents.

Click here to visit their website.

Rudgwick is a village fairly local to me, and every year they hold a huge outdoor steam fair. It is quite a popular event, as many people travel from all round the country to visit it.

I have been to there a few times in previous years.

The weather was a bit wet and drizzly, but it was not too bad, as it was not muddy or anything.

I drove us to Rudgwick, and we parked in a field close to the event.

As we queued up to enter, I could see and smell the smoke coming from the many steam powered engines.

There were many different types of steam engine.

It was interesting seeing them working and powering various machines.

rs22

One steam engine was powering a sawmill.

rs46

rs41

Another steam engine was running a hay bail-making machine. It was funny watching an old dog leap around this machine. The dog was enjoying playing a game of catching the loose pieces of hay floating in the air by using its mouth.

We found a steam-powered car, which was interesting seeing all its gauges and workings. The car had a golden serpent with red ruby eyes on the side of it.

rs28

rs27
Its strange to have a serpent on a car - I'd like one on mine!

There was a steam-powered music organ, which had moving parts including classic figures playing instruments.

rs7

rs8

It was funny seeing old men driving miniature steam engines around the grounds, as they were child sized machines.

rs10

rs11

They also had steam powered rides.

Lots of old classic cars, tractors, army vehicles, fire engines, and motorbikes were scattered around the place. Dad spotted an old car, which he used to own a similar model of many years ago, before I was around.

I enjoyed seeing all the many animals and birds they had there, like big dogs pulling carts, miniature horses, giant rabbits, sheep, little sheep, goats, owls, ducks, and chickens.

In the arena they let various enthusiasts show off their various animals, pets, cars, bikes, and machines.

It was amusing seeing the motorbikes go around the arena, as there was a young guy following them on a tiny little bike, which looked like a hairdryer on wheels!

And they're off!

Spot the hairdryer on wheels!

The live music was quite fun. They had a band come from Dorset singing songs like ‘I’ve Got a Combine Harvester’ in a country accent.

It was all very rustic with many old farmer types there.

I liked the beer and food tents.

The stalls were interesting to browse round, with things like games to play such as boating, stuff to buy and collect, collections of toy cars, trains, aeroplanes, farm toys, clothes, food, pet goods, anything and everything.

On one stall, I found a load of different types of aliens. They were only £2 each, so I bought some, which I may use to decorate my office desk, or my room.

My collection of aliens, which include a Grey, a Roswell Crash Alien, and a Alien Human Cross Hybrid. Cool!

I enjoyed my day at the steam fair, it was all very British and interesting seeing the things from our history.

rs38

I like objects from our past, as they show craftmanship, creativity, imagination, working together, and of happier, and more simple times.

I think we live in quite a dull world now, which is full of petrol powered cars, electric light bulbs, computers, TV's, offices and unhappy people, or maybe that's just my world.
