Blackout

< Wedding At Barnett Hill | Blog | Drum Circle >

On Saturday night, I was at home enjoying watching a DVD with my parents, when all of a sudden, we had a power cut, which put an end to us watching the film, as we were left in total darkness.

Outside the streetlights and other houses were left in darkness too.

It turned out the whole of my village had a power cut that night.

Without any electricity we could not finish watching the film, I could not go on my computer, and there were no lights to switch on.

My Mum lighted some candles to bright some light into the darkness.

I enjoyed seeing the candle light, as it bathed our home in a warm comforting glow. It created interesting shadows and light effects, so I got my camera out and took some pictures.

Self-portrait shots

Some of the candle pictures came out quite well, like the ones of my Dad reading by candle light, and the ones of the candles themselves, with their flickering and dancing flames.

It was quite difficult to get the flame into focus, but I achieved a good shot of a flame a few times

This candle holder gave out star-shaped patterns of light

I also had a play around with my torch by lighting my face, an alien, and a robot in my room, to give an eerie effect.

Although I missed seeing the film that night, I had just as much fun playing around with my camera in the darkness by candle light.

Candle by May Richardson

I light my candle,
melting it clear
the air whispers,
sometimes too near.
My candle burns
yellow, blue, white,
I keep it going
all through the night.
Sometimes it flickers,
moving in torrid patterns,
circling, dwindling, sparking tatters,
flame wanes, then rises up,
springing form what you thought was no more.
It keeps on fighting,
melting wax as time goes by,
the candle is me,
and it is I.

I enjoyed these shots. I love it when the power goes out in our house; everything goes so quiet (no refrigerator motor, washer, dryer, computers, tv, etc.) It's relaxing to me, until Hubby starts that noisy generator!
