Bullseye

One of my friends Tristan recently invited me to a quiz night at his apartment.

The theme of the evening was based on the popular 1980’s television quiz show called Bullseye.

Bullseye - early intro 1980

The show was a mix of quiz questions and playing darts to win prizes.

A clip from the TV show

Bullseye used to be hosted by a stand up comedian called Jim Bowen.

Jim Bowen on Bullseye

Jim Bowen had a number of catchphrases on the show like;-

• “Super, smashing, great”
• “Let's have a look at what you could've won!”
• “It'll take me two minutes to count this money out, see you in a couple of minutes"
• "The ones that are lit are the ones that you can hit"
• “Stay out of the black, and in the red - there's nothing in this game for two in a bed”
• “Remember lads, if you fail to reach a hundred and one or more with six darts, you get your BFH: Bus Fare Home”
• “All for the throw of a dart!”
• “Wouldn't be the same without a bit of Bully on Sunday, would it?”

Jim Bowen could be quite a blue comic, as you can see in this spoof episode of Bullseye, which you can view by clicking here. His television career ended after he made a racist comment on the radio. Its the same fate which has sadly happened to quite a few of the old stars from the 1970's and 80's, as they came from an era where political correctness didn't exist.

The shows mascot was a bull called Bully, who featured in the opening credits, and contestants were given a Bully doll as a consolation prize.

When I arrived at Tristan’s apartment, he had the Bullseye theme tune playing on his DVD player, a Jim Bowen soundboard, Bullseye inflatable chairs, Bullseye dart boards, and best of all a selection of prizes.

There were six people playing Bullseye, split into three groups of two players each. One player answered questions, and the other one threw the darts. In the three teams, there was me and Kevin, Anna and Brian, and Phil and Coxy.

Anna and Phil were the best at answering the questions, and Brian was the best darts player.

Me and Kevin lost the game, because I was not the best at answering the questions, and Kevin was not the best darts player.

Anna and Brian’s team came first, they won some prizes, but decided to gamble their prizes for a chance to win the star prize, which was some vouchers, and a secret prize. Anna and Brian lost their gamble and all of their prizes, so Tristan gave a chance to the runners up, who were Phil and Coxy.

Phil and Coxy won some prizes too, but also decided to gamble them for the star prize. But they lost the gamble too.

Tristan then handed over the game to me and Kevin. I won a few prizes on the dart board, and so did Kevin. As the others had lost the star prize by gambling, Kevin and I took a team decision not to gamble, and to keep our prizes.

I won a radio, and an electronic game called 20Q, which can guess what you are thinking within 20 questions. Kevin won a small games console, which you can plug into a TV, and some sweets.

It was a fun evening at Tristan's Bullseye quiz night.
