Art And The New Messiah< The Lovebuzz Night | Blog | Hi-jinks On Hayling Island > My friend Chris invited me to go to an event in London on Friday evening called 'The AV Social: Late at Tate'
I went out with Chris earlier that week in Guildford, which was to discuss a music video that I may get involved with. I also went to London before I met Chris that same day, to meet another film maker called Jeannie regarding the same music video. When I met up with Chris, he told me about the upcoming 'Late at Late' event. The party sounded quite fun, as it was held at a famous art gallery in London called Tate Britain, and was 'VJ'ing', which is like DJ'ing, but with video clips! I had never seen or heard of VJ'ing before, so I thought it would be great to go along to see. Chris told me that Frog was also going, with some other friends I knew. Chris sent me the details via Facebook, so I decided to invite a few friends of mine along as well. Anya agreed to come along with me. I got on the train from Guildford to Waterloo. Whilst I was standing on the train, I saw Frog's house mate Julia sat on a seat talking to her boyfriend Joe on her mobile. I sat next to Julia, and then when she finished her call, we had a chat on the train whilst waiting to get to Waterloo. Julia was going up to London to visit her boyfriend Joe, but she said she might join us all for a drink after the 'Late at Tate' event. Me and Julia left each other at Waterloo. I called Anya and she was on her way to Waterloo. Anya arrived at Waterloo. Then we walked towards the Tate along the Southbank and by the Thames. It was a lovely sunny day, and we both enjoyed walking along the Thames together, watching the many people and boats on the river. I bought us both an ice cream, which we both enjoyed eating on our journey. Me and Anya arrived at the Tate. But we realised that it was Tate Modern, and not Tate Britain! They are two different galleries in London. We needed to be at Tate Britain, and not Tate Modern! So we walked back along the way we came, then we crossed a bridge over the river to the correct side of the Thames. It was a very long walk, but the weather and scenery was nice, so we did not complain. On the way we passed the Houses of Parliament. We noticed some antiwar protesters camped near there in a tent, with rainbow coloured peace signs. All along the road in front of the Houses of Parliament were lots big blocks, which I guess are to stop terrorists driving into the building and blowing the place up. We eventually arrived at Tate Britain after our long walk. I gave Chris and Frog a call, and they were both inside the gallery. Me and Anya had a look round the Tate, and we enjoyed what we saw. The video clips were being played on the walls, they were quite arty and a bit psychedelic. We watched one short film, which was of a bathroom. Things like a bar of soap suddenly grew legs and calmly walked across the screen, which later followed small goats appearing, it was quite surreal and fun to watch. Other film clips were more abstract, with shapes and colours in time to music.
I got myself and Anya some drinks, olives and crisps, as they had food and drinks at the event. The people at the event were quite interesting characters. I expected to see a guy wearing a black beret, polo neck jumper, with a goatee beard and dark sunglasses. They were not far off from looking like the crowd you would see at a jazzy arty 1960's scene. We then eventually found Chris and Frog. Frog had his friend David Shayler with him. David is fairly famous and he was in the press some years ago, which was due to him whistle blowing about MI5. I had an interesting conversation with David Shayler. We talked a bit about his time working for MI5 and about his whistle bowling. But, he then turned his conversation to more unusual subjects. David told me that he was the new Messiah! It was very strange. I don't feel that David is the new Jesus, but it was interesting hearing about in what he believed himself to be. David is really into symbolism, so things like his old postcode in Bristol, an acronym of his name, and various texts gave him the clues and realisation in his mind that he was the new Messiah. David also told me about his magic mushroom taking. I think the magic mushrooms gave him these thoughts. I was going to blame one of my friends for doing this to him, but it was no one I knew, who caused David to become the new Messiah.
I liked David; he was an interesting and an intelligent guy.
Anyway, I also chatted to Frog and Chris, and Anya joined in. Not long after that, we all decided to find a pub to have a few drinks together in. We all followed David, our new Messiah, out of the gallery, as he knew where a good pub was. It was a long walk, but we eventually arrived at the new Messiah's old local. David 'Christ re-born' Shayler thought it was a good idea to skin up outside the pub. So, we waited whilst he was trying to roll up a joint and light it in the cold windy air. We then went inside the pub for a few drinks, and a friend of Chris' arrived on the scene. Chris's friend was a Canadian guy and another film maker. After we had a few drinks, me and Anya left Frog, David, Chris, and Chris' Canadian friend in the pub, as Anya needed to catch her train back home. Me and Anya caught the tube to Waterloo, then we said our goodbyes for the night. It was a great evening, I enjoyed it. An eclectic mix of long walks, art and religion, all in one night!
