Entering The Guildford Calendar Painting Competition

< The Return To Charterhouse | Blog | Rob's Stag Weekend >

Yesterday I entered my two pictures that I had made into a local painting competition with Frog.

The competition was for a calendar showing local scenes of around Guildford.

I painted the two below pictures of Guildford Castle using watercolours and black ink.

Frog painted the below picture of Guildford Cathedral by airbrushing.

We had to hand in our pictures to the Brew House between 10am to 12pm for the judging, and then collect them again in the afternoon.

I met Frog that morning at his cottage by the river and we took pictures of each other there holding the paintings.

The Brew House is located behind Guild House, where the café is.

Frog and I walked along the High Street towards Guild House at around 10.30am, and we saw a busker on the street, who Frog knew.

As we enter the Guild House we asked the woman at reception where we needed to go, and she directed us to the café.

At the café, they showed us where the Brew House building was.

We walked up some steps to the top floor of the Brew House, to where the competition was being held.

There was a posh elderly woman there, who was one of the judges. We had to give her some money to enter the competition, which was £5 per painting. I paid £10, whilst Frog paid £5.

We saw many other paintings in the room, which other local artists had entered.

Some of the paintings were very well done, and looked like the ones you would see on a postcard, or a Christmas card.

I realised after seeing some of the other entries that I was not going to get into the calendar.

It was interesting seeing all of the different styles as well. Some of them were done in modern styles, such as a cubism version of Guildford Cathedral, or very abstract scenes of the River Wey. A few of them looked a bit too modern, and nothing like Guildford, or any other place at all!

We left the Brew House and had some tea and cake at the café.

As it was a nice sunny day, we thought to have a walk round to enjoy the warm weather.

We walked towards Allan Grounds, which is a small park with gardens, a bowling green, and a tennis court.

On the way, Frog went into an independent gaming shop, which was closing down. I never knew it was there before. They had some interesting board games, which included an Illuminati card game. It had scenes showing various conspiracies such as the 9/11 Twin Tower attack. Had this game been the original one, then it would have been quite valuable, as it was banned due to its content. There were also other interesting bits and pieces in there. It was a shame that it was closing down, as all the small independent shops are going now, and are instead being taken over by dull corporations and their various money grabbing chains.

After we left the shop we entered Allan Grounds. I showed Frog the air vent coming out of the ground, which is part of Foxenden Air Raid Shelter. I went inside the shelter with Ian last year, read about it by clicking here . We also walked round part of the gardens and found that we could not exit that way, but we got out ok in the end.

I showed Frog the entrance to Foxenden Air Raid Shelter, which is a metal door inside a nearby multi-storey car park.

We walked out of the car park and I saw a playground with a long metal slide. The playground gate was locked and was all fenced off. I jumped over the fence and ran over to the slide to slide down it as a joke. Once I had slid down it, I ran back towards the fence, climbed on top of it to jump off it, but my foot got stuck, and I landed head first into the ground with my foot caught in the fence. It was a good job I did not break my ankle! I did graze my leg and hand though.

From the playground I thought it would be nice to visit the gardens of Stoke Park to get an ice cream from the café there, as it was nearby.

We walked to Stoke Park and around the gardens. There were many families there. Every square inch was filled with them. The paddling pool and everywhere was heaving with lots of humans. I was going to take a photo of the mass crowd with my camera, as it would have made a good picture, but Frog warned me not too, in case an over protective mother or father thought we were paedophiles.

I bought myself a blue Slush Puppy crushed ice drink and Frog an ice cream with a flake at the café.

We then sat under the shade of a nearby tree to enjoy our drinks and ice cream. We took a few pictures of each other with my camera.

After we had a sit down, we walked round some more of the gardens in Stoke Park. They have a sensory garden there, which has lots of plants and herbs that either had an unusual texture to touch, smell strongly, or make a noise in the wind. We enjoyed that garden the best there.

It was now lunchtime, so we left Stoke Park to walk back towards the town.

We had our lunch in Wagamama, which is a Japanese restaurant. I had a salad with plum wine, and Frog had soup with noodles and Saki drink. I took some photos of Frog eating.

After we had eaten, it was now time to return to Brew House, to see if our paintings had been put forward for the calendar.

We walked back up the High Street towards Guild House.

Inside Brew House we saw a lot more paintings and various people collecting them. Some were disappointed they had not won and were speaking to the posh elderly woman about it.

The woman told us that we were not going to be in the calendar, which was a bit disappointed for us both.

She told Frog that he should show Guildford Cathedral his painting, as they might be able to use it as a notelet.

We left the gallery and joked that we could make our own calendar featuring the gallery woman, the Mayor, and the Bearded Lady.

Then we looked round various shops to frame our paintings.

Frog bought a picture frame in the Friary shopping centre.

As we left the Friary I told Frog that I was meeting Chris at the White House pub to discuss a synopsis for a film or mini series idea with him. Chris works for a film company based in London.

We had some drinks sat outside the White House and Chris came along. Chris had brought back some DVD’s that I had leant him, and he also gave me some story ideas he had written himself.

Frog left the pub to go home back to his cottage, and I went for a coffee with Chris at the Nero Café and I went home after that.

It was another enjoyable day.

Hi Molly. There is a cafe hut in Stoke Park behind the tennis courts near the pond. It might not be the Slush Puppy brand, but its a nice crushed ice drink, in blue and red which gives brain freeze like the orginal!
